SkySim — From Radar Scenarios to Reproducible IQ Data

print-icon

SkySim

SkySim is SkyRadar’s technical radar simulator for generating reproducible radar signals and target scenarios without depending on a live radar environment.

It complements SkyRadar’s physical radar systems and provides controlled simulated IQ data for training, experimentation and signal-processing exercises in FreeScopes.

SkySim supports multiple radar principles and allows instructors and engineers to repeat, modify and compare scenarios under controlled conditions.

For radar training organisations, universities, defence academies and engineering laboratories.

Training Advantages

  • Repeat Scenarios — Generate reproducible exercises for instruction, comparison and assessment.
  • Control Parameters — Configure radar principles, targets and supported scenario parameters.
  • Generate IQ Data — Produce simulated radar data for visualisation and processing in FreeScopes.
  • Compare Radar Types — Work with Pulse, Pulse Compression, Pulse Doppler and FMCW scenarios.
  • Prepare Live Exercises — Explore concepts before moving to compatible physical radar systems.
  • Support Remote Training — Use controlled simulator scenarios where live radar access is impractical.

What SkySim Does

SkySim generates radar scenarios and corresponding simulated radar data that can be processed and visualised in FreeScopes.

Typical applications include understanding radar principles and signal chains, comparing radar configurations, analysing target behaviour, experimenting with processing parameters, repeating identical scenarios, preparing live-radar exercises and supporting remote learning.

From Simulation to Signal Processing

SkySim generates. FreeScopes processes.

SkySim creates the radar scenario and produces the corresponding simulated radar data. FreeScopes provides the environment in which trainees inspect, visualise and process those signals.

The same processing concepts can therefore be studied with simulated data from SkySim or signals from compatible live SkyRadar radar systems.

What Trainees Do

  • Configure a supported radar principle, targets and scenario parameters
  • Generate repeatable simulated radar data and IQ output
  • Inspect and visualise the generated signals in FreeScopes
  • Compare Pulse, Pulse Compression, Pulse Doppler and FMCW scenarios
  • Repeat identical scenarios while changing selected parameters
  • Prepare and review exercises before or after working with compatible live radar hardware

Why Use Simulation Together With Live Radar?

SkySim complements live radar training.

Live radar exposes trainees to physical targets, antennas, propagation and environmental effects. SkySim adds reproducible scenarios, precise parameter control, repeatable exercises, remote training and controlled comparison of signal-processing approaches.

SkySim is a technical training simulator. It is not a replacement for radar hardware or operational radar software.

  • Simulated IQ data
  • Comparable training datasets

Supported Radar Types

  • Pulse Radar
  • Pulse Compression Radar

Where It Fits

Training Scenario → SkySim → Simulated Radar Data → FreeScopes → Visualisation, DSP and Analysis

SkySim is the scenario and radar-signal generation layer. FreeScopes is the trainee workspace for signal visualisation, processing and analysis.

SkySim ECCM extensions add simulator-side disturbance and deception scenarios. FreeScopes ECCM modules provide the corresponding student-side analysis and processing environment. These are separate product functions.

System Requirements and Delivery Boundary

  • SkyRadar CloudServer Software
  • A dedicated SkyRadar Server Module for SkySim
  • A separate dedicated Server Module for CloudServer Software
  • Relevant FreeScopes modules for visualisation and processing

Exact licence modules, scenario-editor functions, export formats and final parameter availability depend on the delivered software release and must be confirmed.

Who It Is For

  • ATSEP instructors and civil-aviation technical training organisations
  • Defence academies and military radar schools
  • Universities and radar-engineering programmes
  • Signal-processing and radar research laboratories
  • Remote and distributed training environments

Learning Outcomes

Trainees can explain the separation between radar-scenario generation and signal processing, configure repeatable scenarios, compare supported radar principles, interpret simulated IQ data in FreeScopes and relate simulator exercises to compatible live-radar training.
