FreeScopes Record, Replay & Livestream

FreeScopes Record, Replay & Livestream captures radar IQ data and associated metadata, replays recorded datasets and supplies live data to the training environment where supported.

FreeScopes also connects radar training directly with external numerical computing environments. Data can be exported from any point in the FreeScopes block diagram as HDF5 for processing in MATLAB or other numerical computing environments, then re-imported into FreeScopes to visualize and compare the outputs of externally developed filters, algorithms and processing chains.

This bidirectional workflow enables instructors and trainees to repeat experiments with identical inputs, compare FreeScopes and externally developed processing approaches, and combine real-radar and simulated-data workflows.

Designed for radar-training laboratories, universities, defence academies and technical training environments.

Product in Action

Product in Action

Exporting radar data from FreeScopes and running it in MATLAB.

Training Advantages

  • Repeat Experiments — Replay the same captured data for consistent demonstrations and exercises.
  • Use Reproducible Datasets — Let instructors and trainees work with identical radar inputs.
  • Compare Processing Approaches — Apply different FreeScopes processing chains to the same dataset.
  • Train Without Live Radar Operation — Use recorded scenarios when live acquisition is impractical.
  • Develop Algorithms Externally — Export data from any FreeScopes processing stage to MATLAB or another numerical environment, then re-import the results for visualization and comparison.
  • Combine Real and Simulated Workflows — Work with data from compatible radar sources and SkySim.

Record, Replay and Livestream Radar Training Data

Compatible radar sources provide real measurements where applicable, while SkySim provides simulated radar IQ data and scenarios. FreeScopes Record, Replay & Livestream handles capture, replay and live-data workflows where supported, and FreeScopes processing modules provide trainee-side analysis and visualisation.

Radar or SkySim data source → Record, Replay & Livestream → FreeScopes processing and visualisation

This architecture supports repeatable classroom exercises without presenting the product as an operational surveillance or archiving system.

What Trainees Do

  • Capture supported radar or simulation data for later exercises
  • Replay recorded datasets in FreeScopes
  • Repeat experiments with identical input data
  • Compare processing chains and analysis approaches
  • Work with live radar data where supported
  • Use instructor-prepared datasets when live operation is impractical
  • Export data from any supported point in the FreeScopes block diagram
  • Process exported HDF5 data in MATLAB or another numerical computing environment
  • Re-import externally processed data into FreeScopes as input

Main Training Scope

Recording and Data Capture

  • Capture radar IQ data
  • Preserve associated metadata where supported
  • Prepare datasets for later training use

Replay and Reproducibility

  • Replay previously recorded datasets
  • Repeat experiments with identical input data
  • Compare processing and analysis steps

Livestream and External Numerical Processing

  • Feed live radar data into the training environment where supported
  • Export intermediate radar data from any point in the FreeScopes block diagram
  • Process HDF5 datasets in MATLAB or other numerical computing environments
  • Re-import externally processed data into FreeScopes as input
  • Visualize and compare externally developed filters and algorithms with FreeScopes processing results

Where It Fits

Compatible radar or SkySim source → Record, Replay & Livestream → FreeScopes processing modules

FreeScopes Record, Replay & Livestream complements compatible radar sources, SkySim and FreeScopes processing modules. A NextGen radar or another compatible source supplies real measurements where applicable; SkySim supplies simulated data and scenarios; the extension handles supported capture, replay and live-data workflows; an external numerical environment provides optional external HDF5 processing; and FreeScopes supports re-import, trainee-side visualization and comparison. CloudServer and the Server Module may support larger classroom deployments where required.

Prerequisites

  • FreeScopes environment
  • Compatible radar, simulator or dataset source
  • Record, Replay & Livestream extension
  • CloudServer and Server Module where required by classroom scale or delivery architecture

Who It Is For

  • Radar engineering students
  • ATSEP and radar technical trainees
  • Defence academies
  • Universities and research laboratories
  • Instructors preparing repeatable radar exercises

Learning Outcomes

External Algorithm Development & Validation: Trainees learn to export intermediate radar data from any point in the FreeScopes block diagram as HDF5, develop or test filters and algorithms in MATLAB or another numerical computing environment, and re-import the processed results into FreeScopes for visualization and comparison.

Trainees can also explain the difference between recording, replay and livestream workflows, capture supported radar or simulation data for later training use, and replay recorded datasets for repeatable experiments.
