FreeScopes ATC I — From Radar Returns to Moving Targets, Plots and Tracks

print-icon

FreeScopes ATC I

FreeScopes ATC I extends the Basic I and Basic II processing environment into surveillance-oriented radar training. Trainees learn how moving targets are separated from clutter, how detections become plots and tracks, and how post-processing improves target visibility in complex environments. The module provides a practical bridge from core radar DSP to ATC-oriented moving-target detection and tracking concepts.

Designed for ATSEP training, military radar academies, universities and radar-engineering laboratories using supported radar, simulator or replayed datasets.

Product in Action

Compare MTI, MTI-PP, MTD and MTD-DF approaches and see how different processing methods improve the visibility of moving targets.

Training Advantages

  • Compare Moving-Target Processing — Explore MTI-PP, STS, MTD and MTD-DF in a practical training workflow.
  • Work with Clutter — See how clutter suppression and supporting tools affect target visibility.
  • Detect Moving Targets — Apply detection thresholds and interpret moving-target responses.
  • Add Doppler Validation — Use phase-shift plausibility in MTD-DF to examine Doppler-consistent detections.
  • Move from Detections to Tracks — Follow the progression from radar returns to detections, plots and tracks.
  • Prepare for Advanced ATC Processing — Establish the processing basis for later ATC II training.

Move from Basic Detection to Surveillance-Oriented Processing

FreeScopes ATC I takes learners from radar returns through detection and moving-target processing to plots and tracks. Trainees compare processing approaches, observe how clutter affects results and interpret how detections develop into a surveillance-oriented picture.

The module is designed for instruction and analysis. Results depend on the connected radar, simulator or replayed dataset and on the functions included in the current build.

What Trainees Do

  • Compare MTI-PP, STS, MTD and MTD-DF moving-target processing
  • Apply detection thresholds and examine their effect on target visibility
  • Investigate clutter suppression with delay-and-subtract processing
  • Use phase-shift plausibility to validate Doppler-consistent detections
  • Work with ZVF, Clutter Map and Magnitude Approximator where applicable
  • Generate and interpret plots and tracks
  • Compare standard and extended plot-and-track views
  • Explore Standing Person Recognition as an additional training algorithm

Where It Fits

Basic I → Basic II → ATC I → ATC II

ATC I is the first surveillance-oriented step in the FreeScopes learning path. It builds on the signal-processing foundations of Basic I and the two-dimensional range-and-Doppler work of Basic II, before the more advanced tracking approaches introduced in ATC II.

Prerequisites

  • FreeScopes Basic I
  • FreeScopes Basic II
  • A supported radar, SkySim Radar Simulator or approved replayed dataset

Who It Is For

  • ATSEP instructors and technical training centres
  • Military radar academies
  • Universities and applied radar programmes
  • Radar-engineering and signal-processing laboratories

Learning Outcomes

After completing the module, trainees can explain and compare core moving-target processing methods, relate clutter handling and threshold settings to detection results, distinguish detections, plots and tracks, and interpret Doppler-enhanced moving-target views in a training environment.
