FreeScopes Basic II — Move from Core DSP to 2D Radar Processing

print-icon

FreeScopes Basic II

Build on FreeScopes Basic I by applying the 2D FFT to radar data and examining targets across range and Doppler. Trainees learn how movement appears in Doppler views, then explore the results in spectrograms, heatmaps and the 3D Scope. Practical exercises also show how window functions and target properties affect the radar signal.

Designed for ATSEP teachers, military academy instructors, universities and radar-training laboratories using a supported radar, simulator or replayed dataset.

Product in Action

See how FreeScopes Basic II supports practical exploration of two-dimensional radar processing and visualisation.

Training Advantages

  • Apply 2D FFT processing to radar data
  • Examine targets across range and Doppler
  • Connect signal-processing blocks with 3D Scope, spectrogram and heatmap views
  • Compare static thresholds with CFAR 2D
  • Explore radar cross section, Doppler and windowing through practical experiments
  • Prepare for later ATC, ECCM, SAR, AI and military radar training modules

Move from Single Frames to Two-Dimensional Radar Analysis

FreeScopes Basic II takes learners beyond individual signal traces. A burst of radar frames forms a matrix that can be processed with the 2D FFT. This lets trainees examine how target returns develop across range and Doppler and then interpret the result in a 3D Scope, spectrogram or heatmap.

Learners follow the signal chain from bursts and transforms to thresholding, detection and visual interpretation. Basic II is a training module; available results depend on the connected radar, simulator or replayed dataset and on the functions included in the current build.

What Trainees Do

  • Compare A-Scope and 3D Scope outputs
  • Use Burst and 3D Scope to represent frames over time
  • Apply FFT 1D processing and reorder FFT indices
  • Apply the 2D FFT and examine range-Doppler views
  • Analyse movement in Doppler visualisations, spectrograms and heatmaps
  • Compare static thresholds with CFAR 2D
  • Apply window functions and observe their spectral effects
  • Investigate how target size, angle, shape and material affect radar cross section
  • Use inverse FFT in relevant exercises where applicable

Where It Fits

FreeScopes Basic I → FreeScopes Basic II → ATC / ECCM / SAR / AI / SkySim

Basic I establishes the core DSP and radar-measurement foundation. Basic II adds matrix-oriented processing, 2D FFT and range-Doppler visualisation. Learners can then continue into specialised training paths.

Who It Is For

  • ATSEP training organisations and civil aviation academies
  • Defence academies and military radar schools
  • Universities and technical colleges teaching radar or signal processing
  • Instructors building practical radar laboratory exercises
  • Engineering learners with foundational DSP knowledge

Learning Outcomes

After suitable instruction and practical exercises, learners should be able to explain why 2D processing is used in radar analysis, distinguish major 1D and 2D transform stages, interpret range-Doppler, spectrogram, heatmap and 3D Scope representations, describe how window functions affect spectral analysis, and explain the teaching role of CFAR 2D, thresholding and radar cross-section experiments.
