Radar Training hardware

SkyRadar SSR

With the new standard SSR Mark XII, radar training faces a new challenge. The visualization of diagrams and impulses of signals becomes almost impossible. The signal interrogation by the control center is made selectively, meaning the impulse pattern is sent only once. At the same time the response is also sent selectively; the aircraft’s transponder does not respond to multiple interrogations by the same control center. Most often, control centers are connected through a radar network (RadNet), avoiding multiple interrogations. Capturing this one-only impulse pattern with an oscilloscope is difficult even for well-equipped experts.

To allow for professional training as required by EUROCONTROL  and other aviation bodies the SkyRadar Consortium has filled this void with SkyRadar SSR.

SkyRadar SSR is a set of digital impulse synthesizers, which provide these impulse patterns continuously, allowing for comfortable visualization through an oscilloscope.  When using each of the interrogation-modes, the signals are triggered independently on control center and aircraft side (through 2 synthesizers). The differences between interrogation- and response impulses can be clearly visualized for the different operating modes.

The system includes the following features:SkyRadar SSR
  • Generation of all possible impulse patterns for Mode S Secondary Surveillance Radars and of all respective transponder responses.
  • Signal quality complies with ICAO Annex 10 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, Volume IV (Surveillance and Collision Avoidance Systems) with respect to impulse duration, tolerances, pauses and flank slopes.
  • Visualization of real air-traffic through Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcasting (ADS B) Real-Time Virtual Radar Receiver (SBS 1)
  • Operating mode can be changed through the Laptop (allowing for interlace mode).
